This was going to be n's 4th of July dress. Then when I realized we would not have her home by then, I decided that I will put her in it when we arrive Stateside and she becomes a U. S. citizen upon landing. She will retain her Russian citizenship, and we will always honor it, but we will obviously be very happy to be bringing her home.
I am a pattern-follower. But I made this up as I went along. I came up with the idea while on one of my seven-hour-apostille drives. The skirt was knit sideways and I used a three needle bind off to join it in a tube. Then I picked up around one edge to knit the tank upwards. I contemplated making the skirt full, but decided to keep it simple.
The bottom edging and edging around the neckline and armholes is crochet. I am not much of a crocheter, but I can pull off an adging like this. It makes for a very nice finished edge. The star was knit by my friend Amy. She was teaching me to knit a star out of one of her crochet books and mine was not looking very star-like. Her second one was the perfect size and I sewed it on using white thread. I still plan to master the star and I might make a matching headband for this little dress. When I hold it up to her on our next trip, I will see if it needs little bloomers. A onesie under it may suffice.
