Four years ago I was devastated. I felt betrayed. After the first four years, to vote for another four? It was incomprehensible to me. Whatever we suffered for the last four years, the majority of the nation voted for it with their eyes wide open...his first four years were a blazing advertisement for what was to come. Would Kerry have been better? We'll never know. However, I hardly think he would have done worse.
I don't think Obama is perfect. I expect he will do things I don't like and I expect he will make mistakes. But I feel better knowing that the guy we just put into the Oval Office will be the smartest guy in the room. I feel better knowing that he approaches problems with careful thought and a spirit of cooperation rather than knee jerk reactions and condescension. I feel better knowing that he understands and respects the constitutional limits of the executive office. I feel better knowing that his focus is on bringing us together in an environment of hope and not on pushing us apart in an environment of fear.
Will I, personally, be better off in four years? I don't know. He's inheriting a hell of a mess, and I don't expect him and his staff to turn it all around immediately. I do expect some things will happen quickly...I think he will immediately reject the idea that the executive office is not accountable to any other branch in a time of war. I do think that our country as a whole will be better off. That makes this a very happy day.
