A pile of papers

It occurs to me that birthing a child and adopting one are opposites in many ways. My labor is happening up front.

Today I sent forth our dossier into the world...some 80 sheets of paper. It will arrive at the agency tomorrow morning, they will review it this week, and if all is well, it will be sent to China on Friday. I hope all is well with it. I hope they deem the doctor's writing legible, our application letter complete, and our photos suitable. I've done my best. It's all been notarized, certified, and authenticated. The photos were carefully chosen with much negotiation Friday night. The required passport-style photos were taken Saturday. Copies were made and the whole thing was assembled with great care.
The last group to receive their referrals waited 23 months, and we are expecting the wait to increase. So we are probably more than two years away from holding our daughter (or daughters) for the first time. But hopefully this part of the process is done. It's been 9 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days since we submitted our application to Great Wall. If I had conceived on that date, we'd be holding our child by now. As it is, we have a long wait beyond our control ahead of us.

But the pile of papers representing us to the Chinese governemnt is gone...and as long as it all looks okay, we will be DTC by the end of the year. There was a time when I was aiming for the end of August, but now I will be content to have our pile of papers in China by year end.
