Okay, so I don't often go into politics or religion on this blog. I do pay attention to both those subjects, however, and this morning I was hit upside the head by this.
Read it. Read it all the way through. I'll wait.
Glad to have you back.
WTF?
Some guy from Iowa decided that the role of the US Government is to recognize "the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world"? And 372 elected officials agreed with him?
THIS was what my congress was doing this morning? Paper and time and thought and money was wasted on this? Is this guy a nut job, or is there a significant portion of Christian society that REALLY feel that they need the recognition of the U.S. House of Representatives? Why? Really, tell me why. The last time I looked, our President and pretty much all the President's men and women currently running the country were Christian. The Supreme Court is full of Christians. Congress has no shortage. Christmas is a federal holiday....can you name another religion in the US sporting one of those? We have a National Christmas Tree. I've seen tons of Christmas programming on TV, heard Christmas music in every store I went into yesterday (including Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, my personal favorite), and mine is the only house on the block with the standard-issue neighborhood "Christmas Spirit Candy Canes" still up in the attic.
Does anybody really think Christmas and Christianity are underrepresented in this country and need more official recognition? Again, WTF? Can anyone tell me a religion that gets more official recognition in the USA?
Dude, we get it. Christianity is important and has shaped all of society in innumerable ways (as has Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Polytheism, and many other 'isms). I'm sure there are some Amazonian tribes unaware of that fact, but the rest of us pretty much get it. Government proclamations are not needed. Christians rule the country and Christmas is all over the freaking place. How insecure can this guy from Iowa possibly be? And why are the others who voted for this humoring and supporting this train of thought? How on earth can anyone think this is necessary or even desirable?
I'm just stunned by this. Appalled.
Gobsmacked, I tell you.
