Texas has five state flowers...all of them different varieties of bluebonnets. We started off with just one strain in 1901, but people got protective about their regional bluebonnet variety, so they were all included in the 70's.
The two main species of Texas bluebonnets are found growing naturally only in Texas and no where else in the world.
Not all bluebonnets are blue...rarer color variations are white and pink.
It is not illegal to pick bluebonnets unless they are on state property, which most roadside blooms are (and then it is illegal to pick Indian paintbrushes and buttercups as well). That being said, the chances of your 5 year old being arrested are slim. It is, however, considered bad form by Texans to pick them and children are taught not to do so as a matter of respect and not necessarily law.
There is even an official Texas state flower song devoted to bluebonnets.

Beautiful!!!! Any chances they'll still be in bloom in oh, say, two weeks? ;)
