I just got an e-mail from a lady in my NIN group. She apparently forwarded it to everyone in her mail box and it was one of those crazy-assed e-mails about how Barack Obama wants to change the national anthem, and how he and his wife hate the flag and have gone to flag burning ceremonies. This was a satirical write-up someone did once and now it's being forwarded as the truth. It was forwarded to me with the hope that "Perhaps there are SOME out there who are beginning to get 'the picture'." Folks, I'm here to tell you....this crap isn't true and snopes gives the details: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp
I know there are folks who will believe anything. But this lady seems like an intelligent gal. I would have expected better from her. There seems to be a whole segment of the population that really thinks the democratic party has nominated, after two years of hardcore, in-depth vetting, a terrorist-loving flag-burning America-hater. It's insulting. I don't agree with McCain on many issues, and I think his choice for vp was rash and misguided, however, I don't find it necessary to demonize the man.
But then, these are also probably the folks who agree with the recent crap a certain party has been dishing out about "real America"...as opposed to the fake America I apparently live in.
When someone starts talking about a certain geographical segment being pro-American, the insinuation is that anyone who doesn't live there is anti-American, and I don't even know how folks can even remotely condone that speech, but apparently there is a whole segment of the population joyously buying into this "us against them" philosophy. It's insulting. Cuz, you know, we don't work hard and teach our children and fight for freedom in the big cities. We don't "grow good people" here. We're elite and we don't give a crap about other people, kindness, goodness, social services, morality, or that pesky middle class. And we have no courage...courage is for small towns.
And don't even get me started on the over-use of the word "elite" in this race. Am I an "elite"? Apparently I qualify even though I grew up in a small town. I live in a big city. I eat arugula. I have an education. I know who the Prime Minister of England is and I can find Iran on a map even without the countries labeled. Although I didn't get a passport handed to me by my parents upon graduation so that I could backpack across Europe on the cheap for three months after I graduated college. Oh, wait, that was my husband. Guess being married to an elite is as good as being one. And I'm fine with that. If living in a big city makes me "elite", if owning a passport and using it regularly makes me "elite", if striving daily to be more educated and informed about the world around me makes me "elite", I'll wear that badge with pride.
And I'll vote for the one I think is the smartest guy in the room..I'll vote for the intellectual... because voting for the guy people would most like to have a beer with... well, we all saw how that one worked out.
