Hawaiian knitting

So we are about three weeks away from Kauai. I, of course, am trying to figure out what to knit. It's a long flight both ways, after all, and I am sure that inbetween the hiking and kayaking there will be some beach time involved. I'm really not a laying in the sun person...more of a knitting in the shade person.
So I need to be fortified with enough knitting. Especially if we end up stuck on the tarmac like these poor people.

Now, for flying I always take socks. Socks can keep me busy for quite some time (approximately 16 hours for a simple pattern), they are very portable as long as I'm not doing stranded knitting, and I can do them on bamboo dpn's in case I get one of those horror-story screeners I've heard about who think toothpick thin metal circs are infinitely more deadly than your average ball point pen or that it is easier to strangle someone with a miniscule purple plastic cable than a belt. I've never had my needles confiscated or even questioned by security, domestically or internationally, and I don't worry about it too much, but I also don't want to be SOL if it does happen. Knitting keeps me sane on long flights. I'll take a book, but knitting keeps me sane. I'm much more likely to do bodily harm if you take the needles away from me.

So I bought some pretty yarn that reminded me of beachy colors and I probably will take it. I'm undecided about the pattern. Part of me wants to be safe and do some ribbing variation I know will work with wildly variegated yarn. Part of me wants to do Monkey. We'll ignore the fact that I currently have two pairs of socks otn, one which I may finish before Hawaii, one I probably won't.

But I just stumbled across this pattern and am beginning to think gloves may be the answer. I'm in love. I actually have another fingerless glove pattern in my files that I like as well. Endpaper mitts. But they are heavily stranded and stranded doesn't travel well for me. One ball of yarn to deal with at a time, thank you. Hmmm...well, I did buy that special tote for holding multiple balls at the same time.....
But I have some great Lorna's Laces nearly solid in stash that would work for this little number on the right. And some remnants I can use for trim.....and I flat out love 'em. Best reason I can think of for knitting them up.
And it's 3:15am. I have a long overdue hair appointment at 11. Must. Go. To. Bed. I can hear C tossing in the bedroom. He had a really bad day at work today and I know he's stressed. Hopefully I won't wake him too much getting ready for bed, as he won't go back to sleep easily if he isn't already awake.

Of course we'll ignore the fact that there are (fill in the blank) number of (fill in the blank)'s on the needles. I would go with Monkey. I'm just finishing up a pair with STR Little Bunny Foo Foo and the things this pattern does with hand dyed yarns is just amazing. Whatever projects you talke you'll have a wonderful time.
