Reading and writing

So we have been using the Funnix program with N. A couple of months ago, she started trying to sound out words, so C did some research and we decided to go with Funnix. It's computer-based.

It isn't a game, though. The parent controls the mouse while the child listens, points, and responds. She's reading words and sentences now and it's really pretty amazing how they take the kids through phonics in a certain order. It gives us some structure for helping her and she can sound out lots of things now. Green Eggs and Ham is full of words she has the tools to figure out. She tries to read a lot when we are out and about. She's been writing her name for a while, knows the whole alphabet upper and lower, and can write most of her numbers from 1-10.

There is also a worksheet for each lesson. We do a lesson every day, although occasionally we miss. Each lesson takes about 30 minutes, but some of the worksheets are getting harder and taking longer now. Early on, she was circling letters and letter combinations, tracing letters, and tracing missing parts of pictures. Now she's writing whole sentences, matching letters, writing in missing letters, circling 3- and 4-letter words in a list of words, and tracing letters.

It's fun to watch her language develop. She has very good verbal skills and it seems like she is going to have good reading skills as well. Time will tell!
